DeVito won the hearts of fans last year when the former Don Bosco Prep star from Cedar Grove joined the Giants as an undrafted free agent and then won three straight games for the team while Jones and Tyrod Taylor were out with injuries.
According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney said that this year, DeVito’s knowledge of the Giants’ system has expanded and he has improved by, “leaps and bounds.”
DeVito still remained QB No. 3 this year after the Giants brought in Drew Lock on a one-year, $5 million deal.
“I mean, it’s like anything else. I know it’s a business,” DeVito said, via Raanan. “So I understood it, I guess, a little bit. The competitiveness in myself, knowing in my head, I thought I had done that or gave a spark or glimpse of what could be, but I knew I was just a rookie. [The Giants] probably wanted a guy who had a little more experience. That’s kind of the path that they went, but we’ll see how it goes moving forward.”
Lock in in his sixth year in the league and has appeared in two games for the Giants this year, going 3-of-8 for six yards.
The Giants fell to 2-7 with the 27-22 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Jones was 20-of-26 for 174 yards and two touchdowns, and added another 54 yards and a touchdown on the ground on seven carries. He tallied zero yards through the air in the first half.
If Jones gets benched, it’s possible that DeVito could see some first-team reps.
